Most people assume Christianity is about becoming a better person. Try harder. Do more good. Clean yourself up for God.
But when Jesus encounters the rich young man in Mark 10, we discover something unsettling: even sincere morality can become a way of trying to prove ourselves worthy.
The man comes to Jesus with an impressive spiritual résumé. He’s faithful. Moral. Serious about God. And yet beneath the surface, Jesus exposes a deeper issue—not just behavior, but worship. The commandments reveal what we truly trust, what we cling to, and the false saviors we depend on instead of God.
This Sunday we begin our new six-week summer series, Free to Be—a journey into the freedom Christ gives through the Gospel. Because Scripture is not merely a list of religious rules; it is God’s roadmap to freedom:
freedom from fear,
freedom from shame,
freedom from isolation,
and freedom from constantly trying to prove yourself.
The good news is that Jesus does not merely expose sinners—He loves them.
This matters because salvation is ultimately impossible for us to achieve on our own. No amount of moral effort can rescue us. But what is impossible for humanity is possible with God. This week we’ll discover that real freedom begins not when we finally measure up—but when we rest in what Christ has already done for us. Summer Service time is Sunday at 9am!
