Have you ever put together a résumé? There’s something a little daunting about it. You’re taking everything you’ve done, accomplished, learned, and achieved and putting it on paper to answer one basic question: “Am I worth something to you?”
The problem is that we can start doing the same thing with our lives. We build a résumé in our heads and begin measuring ourselves by our successes, our relationships, our careers, our reputation, our morality…AND even our failures and regrets. And underneath all of it is the same question: “Am I enough?”
In Week 3 of JOY THAT HOLDS, we turn to Philippians 3 and discover where Paul found his identity. He had an impressive résumé, but he came to realize that none of it could give him what he truly needed. His identity—and his greatest treasure—was not found in what he had accomplished. It was found in knowing Christ.
When Christ is your identity, you no longer have to spend your life proving who you are. You can stop looking backward at your failures or trying to build a résumé impressive enough to make you feel secure. Instead, because Christ has made you His own, you are free to press on toward Him.
Your résumé may change. Your circumstances may change. Your reputation may change. Your abilities may change. But Christ does not change.
