Memorial Day – it’s the start of summer.  Time for barbecues, opening up cabins, or spending time on area lakes – albeit if the weather cooperates. It’s also a weekend in which many families visit the cemeteries. We remember those who have fought for our freedom and some will visit the graves of these soldiers this weekend. Over the years, as families visited the cemeteries honoring our soldiers who died in combat, many have also made it a priority to visit the gravesites and remember all their loved ones who have died.

In the Bible when Sarah died, Abraham bought land and established a family burial site in Canaan, the land God promised him. In Abraham’s day, death and burial were steeped in ritual and traditions. Mourning, tears, even loud wailing was part of their culture. It is important to spend time remembering our loved ones and sharing their stories to the younger generations. In the Bible, God instructs us to spend time remembering and He has promised us that He will remember us. He is especially close to those who grieve.

I hope you will join us for worship this holiday weekend.
