This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Everybody has a mother, but not every woman is a mother. And there are some who would love nothing more than to have children and are unable.

Our culture probably idealizes mothers to an almost unattainable level. A quick scan of the Bible reveals the difficulties of motherhood. Ruth was left childless and widowed at a young age. Rachel, Hannah, and Sarah were unable to bear children for years.

Two mothers of two kings, both named Ahaziah, encouraged their sons to be wicked and unjust. The Prodigal Son acted with terrible disrespect toward his father and mother. I’m thankful the Bible doesn’t leave out the rough edges of real life: women in diverse life circumstances, sometimes thriving, sometimes coping, and sometimes going under.

As much as our culture tends to sentimentalize this day we set aside to honor moms, the truth is that mothers, like all of us, are a mixed bag. There are some mothers and fathers who are great, while others, less so. But by in large, the mothers I’ve come to know, usually come through as loving, caring and incredibly resourceful people. Abraham Lincoln’s words ring true: “No one is poor who has had a godly mother.”

Join us in worship this Sunday at 8:30 or 10:00 am as we honor moms and look at what we can learn from three moms in the Bible. We’ll have a photo booth set up for families to take pictures and help celebrate. Live Streaming available at 10:00 AM.

Invite a friend to be your guest.  They will be blessed.
