In the 1992 vice-presidential debate Admiral James Stockdale, a late addition to 3rd party candidate Ross Perot’s ticket, was woefully unprepared and way out of his element. He began with an opening statement that made the nation pause: “Who am I? Why am I here?!” Many thought he sounded confused — but he wasn’t. He was simply recognizing that people didn’t know him yet, and he wanted to speak honestly about why he was there.
