Has America made strides against racism?  Many of us would like to think so. But, with the pinning of a handcuffed black man named George Floyd on his neck until he could no longer breathe, we seem to have taken a giant step backward. I join in grieving with all who mourn his unnecessary and senseless death.

Here at FaithPoint, I reach out to you with a broken and grieving heart. I think I am almost most disturbed by the other officers who refused to intervene, even when prodded to do so by countless bystanders. Their refusal to act reminds me of what silence and inaction can mean in the face of evil and brutal injustice.

There really is only one race—the human race. I was hoping our valiant struggle against Covid-19 was teaching us this lesson again. I was hoping that we were learning how vital it is that we work together in this world. I was hoping we were beginning to understand how Genesis 1 clearly tells us we are all created in the image of God.

I don’t know that anyone can claim to always be above or beyond racism, classism, or any form of hatred or discrimination. We are all sinners in daily need of the mercy of Christ. I do condemn racial and judicial discrimination in all forms. I also pray for healing and condemn any and all acts of revenge or violence. As persons of faith, we commit to being a community that works for justice, peace, love and unity among all people. Whatever our calling as a member of the human race, as Christians we must redouble our efforts to speak against racism and for the value of every human life. Please join me in praying for our nation.
