At one point in Paul’s ministry, he capitulates his outlook and says, “everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me.” Though Paul’s words are written amid praise for his protégé Timothy, who was faithfully raised in the faith by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, clearly Paul is struggling in despair with how the mission is going.

It reminds me of the captain who saw a picture of a boat stuck in the sand. The caption read, “The tide always comes back.”

This Sunday we’ll hear the story of the prophet Elijah who calls on the God of Israel to triumph over the gods of Baal in a true mountaintop experience. And yet soon after, Elijah finds himself down in the depths of despair. We’ll explore why things change and how God leads him out of the doldrums and how the lessons still apply to us today.
