Proverbs 27:1 says, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” When tragedy strikes, I sometimes whisper to myself, “This too will pass.” I haven’t always said that. Through the years, life has taught me that, when hard times come, God provides a new way forward. This “new way” often takes longer than we would like and sometimes looks much different than we anticipate. Distance athletes sometimes refer to hard times as “hitting the wall,” which means, “I’ve got nothing left in the tank,” or “I’ve reached my limit and can’t go on.”

All of us go through hard times … and some go through a lot more difficulty than others. It’s not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when.” It can be a time when pat answers about life and faith just don’t cut it. Tough times can really challenge our faith, challenge everything we believe and shake us to the core.

Thankfully the Bible is not silent about tough times; in fact, it is brutally honest while offering profound lessons on how to cope and overcome the worst of tragedies.
