After a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the audience gave conductor Arturo Toscanini and the Orchestra a prolonged standing ovation. While the audience was still applauding, Toscanini, filled with great emotion, turned to his musicians and whispered, “I am nothing, you are nothing,” Then, in almost adoring tones, Toscanini added, “But Beethoven is everything!”

We live our lives as if on a stage. We would be wise to be overwhelmed with the One who is the True Composer—Jesus Christ. He is both divine Composer and divine Musician, the One in whom “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Few passages elevate “the One who made himself nothing” more poetically and powerfully than the second chapter of Philippians. I am nothing; Christ is everything.
